Crowns and Bridges in Victoria, BC

Dental crowns or bridges are an easy way to improve the look of your smile after dental decay or tooth loss. At Vancouver Island Prosthodontics, we can restore your smile with tooth-colored prosthetics and help you feel confident about your appearance.

What are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape and strength. Crowns are created to match your surrounding teeth, providing a natural and aesthetically pleasing finish. While a crown attached to an implant can replace an entire tooth, a standard crown is meant to restore a natural tooth with moderate decay, preventing the spread of damage.

Our in-house lab technicians match restorations to your surrounding teeth, treating unsightly cracks, chips, or large fillings. Dr. John Keyes and his associates create and crowns from high-noble gold, porcelain, zirconia or e.max®. We work with our patients to meet their cosmetic needs and base treatment on budget, aesthetics, dental habits, and bite. Your new crown or bridge should look and feel as natural as possible.

The Dental Crown Treatment Process

The placement of a crown can usually be completed in two appointments. During the first, we take X-rays and determine if there is enough healthy tooth structure to support a crown. After applying a local anesthetic, one of our prosthodontists will file down the chewing surface of the damaged tooth and take an impression. Technicians at our onsite lab create a custom crown for you, which is placed at a second appointment. The prosthodontist will check the final fit, make sure the colors match and will then cement the crown in place. Most dental crowns last between five and fifteen years.

What are Fixed Bridges?

Fixed bridges are a permanent solution to missing teeth that do not require a surgical procedure. Bridges use two crowns attached to surrounding teeth and an artificial tooth in the middle to fill the space. A fixed bridge will prevent your remaining teeth from shifting and can be created from a variety of materials to meet your aesthetic goals.  Fixed bridges provide a non-invasive solution to missing teeth and look like your natural smile. Like crowns, placement of fixed bridges requires a few visits with a similar treatment process.
